There was a real feeling of history when the Oxfordshire Welsh Society hosted a Celebration of St David in song in the Chapel of Oxford University’s Welsh College.
An overwhelming aura that the founders of Jesus College - Hugh Aprice, William Awbery, Robert Lougher, John Lloyd and Thomas Huyck – looked down and would have felt pride in that the Welsh tradition was being upheld in such an eloquent and vocal style with the Cor Meibion De Cymru (South Wales Male Choir).
The choir, so soon after their demanding performance in Brecon just the night before, travelled to Oxford and committed themselves to another festival of song in the Chapel in Jesus College. They were superb. The programme was so well selected to display Welsh culture and versatility from wonderful singing to poetry to chapel. Calon Lan was delightful.
Jim Mitchell, as soloist, was quite outstanding and totally self assured. His rendering of “My little Welsh Home” was haunting and full of feeling.
We all learned a great deal about the early history of Saint David from the scholarly Reverend Michael Williams and The Reverend Mary Carney delighted us with her poems. Let there be more!!
